Direct Insurance Company Billing

What is one of your most valuable possessions? Very likely, it is your house. You’ve probably invested an awful lot of money in it. Your home needs continual upkeep and maintenance. This helps it grow in value and protects your investment. Additionally, however, it ensures the safety, convenience, and comfort of those living in it. One aspect of many homes – but not all – is the basement. People love to turn these into recreational areas, home entertainment areas/bars, guest rooms, craft rooms, and more.

The worst thing about basements is that, very frequently, they are damp. Depending on the area of the country in which you live, this can be a problem with most every house on the block, or just yours. How do you know if you have water damage in your basement? There are some obvious signs to look for.

We’re going to examine basement areas, and the most common signs of damage from water. This will help you protect your investment in your home.

Mold

If on the wood, walls, furniture, and other materials found in your basement, you notice the growth of mold, this is a sign of water damage. Its appearance can look like a white, dark green, or a black substance. The musty smell coming from it is uniquely distinctive.

You need to locate the moisture source and have professionals see to it.

Nasty Odor

A damp or musty smell is likely a sign of a wet basement. There may not be water damage, but there’s definitely moisture. The stronger the smell, the more likely you’re going to need repair services to see to any damage done by water.

No matter how many times you clean your basement, if the moisture still persists, you won’t be able to get that smell out. It will permeate everything in the basement, as well. From excessive water damage and moisture buildup, another likely result is mildew and mold. This also contributes to the bad smell. Additionally, it’s extremely unhealthy for your home’s inhabitants to breathe.

Cracking

Moisture at an excessive level can lead to cracking in the following:

  • Windows

  • Door panels

  • Foundation walls

  • Floors

If cracks in your doors and lower level windows are left unaddressed, your basement will get more water leaking in. You certainly don’t want that. Cracks must be repaired!

Altered Textures or Colors on Surfaces

If, on the floor or walls of your basement, you notice discoloration – usually brownish or yellowish – there’s every chance that this is a water stain. If you have paint or wallpaper, the walls may warp, the paint or wallpaper may peel, and that’s another water damage indicator.

Be on the watch for the appearance of efflorescence if you have an unfinished basement. You may also see on the walls, a salt-like, white substance. If water has climbed up the walls of your basement, it will be represented by these indications. The extent of damage will be evidenced, in part, by these signs.

An additional sign of water damage could be that the under padding of your flooring feels spongy. Regardless, these are signs that you have a definite leak or seepage problem that needs immediate attention from a professional.
