Alpharetta Shower Drain Backup: Sewage Cleanup and Structural Drying
Location: Alpharetta, GA
Type of Loss: Shower drain sewage backup
Response Time: Less than 1 hour
Total Project Time: 1 day of mitigation + 6 days of drying
The Situation: Sewage Water Coming Up Through the Shower Drain
A homeowner in Alpharetta called Provision after she noticed what looked like dirty water coming up through the shower drain in her bathroom. Turns out that soft tissue had blocked the pipes and caused a backup, resulting in dirty sewage water going up through the shower drain, flooding onto the bathroom floor, and then into other areas of her house. Sewage-related water losses are especially stressful because they involve contamination concerns in addition to all of the water damage. In situations like this, fast response and proper cleanup are very important for the health of people and pets and to prevent further damage.
Fast Emergency Response in Alpharetta
The homeowner initially contacted a plumber who then identified the blockage. This plumber has done work with Provision in the past so they recommended us for the sewage cleanup and mitigation work. The homeowner Danielle called us and we were able to get to her house within one hour. That’s one thing that customers appreciate - we’re always quick to respond!
Max was our first employee on-site. He has over two years of experience with us and has worked on many similar sewage backup losses all throughout North Atlanta.
In our experience, one thing that many homeowners don’t know is that flushing the wrong items or too much toilet paper can clog a pipe and possibly result in a huge problem afterward with drain overflows and sewage-related damage. These losses often involve insurance claims, so we regularly help homeowners understand the entire process start-to-finish as well as what documentation is needed for their claim to be processed correctly.
Identifying the Full Extent of the Sewage Damage
The homeowner knew that she had a big problem on her hands with all of the sewage water that had flooded, but it also travelled in between the floors and walls where its not seen. Unfortunately the damage is almost always worse than it appears.
To properly map all of the affected areas and to leave no stone unturned, we used:
Moisture meters
Visual inspection
Professional moisture mapping techniques
Our IICRC-certified lead technicians used our tools to check beneath the LVP flooring and behind the walls to see how far the contaminated water had actually spread. And the news was not good. It had gone under the floor and seeped under other rooms of the house. Given that it was sewage water, cleanup was especially important with all the health risks involved of just letting it sit and grow mold and other contaminants.
So even when surfaces are dried up and it looks like the problem is fixed, moisture can remain trapped underneath flooring materials and inside wall cavities. Because of this, every stage of the project was double-checked with moisture meters to make sure that all affected materials were properly identified and removed. This doesn’t only apply to house materials like flooring and walls, we also analyze personal belongings as well.
Protecting the Home Before Mitigation Began
After the initial inspection and approval process, the homeowner told us to go ahead with the work so our mitigation process began three days later.
Before that began, a professional contents company that we closely work with on many of our projects came out and carefully packed and removed all of the personal belongings that had been affected by the sewage overflow. The contents were transported to their climate-controlled warehouse where they properly cleaned and restored the homeowner’s property. The homeowner Danielle was amazed that the belongings could even be saved, thinking that some important items were gone forever.
This step we take helps protect salvageable belongings while also creating a safer and more organized work environment during cleanup. We typically need everything cleared out from the workspace in order to make sure that nothing gets in the way of proper cleanup.
Safe Sewage Cleanup and Mitigation
Once work began, a three-man IICRC-certified crew from Provision came out in full protective gear and completed a full day of mitigation.
Because sewage water contains contaminants, affected materials like drywall, flooring, and more must be removed and handled carefully according to industry standards that we strictly follow.
Our mitigation process included:
Containment setup
Removal of contaminated materials
Cleaning and sanitizing affected areas
Moisture monitoring throughout the process
Proper disposal of unsalvageable materials
Throughout the project, moisture readings were continuously taken to confirm that all affected areas were being addressed properly. We double check our work constantly to ensure that the homeowner will be returning to a fully cleansed space. Nobody wants to undergo a situation like this to only find out later that the work was only done halfway.
Structural Drying and Daily Monitoring
After mitigation was completed, the home entered a standard six-day drying phase. We’re often asked “why does it take so long to dry out my house?” We tell them that even after all of the wet materials are removed, moisture stays trapped inside structural materials like wood, subfloors, and so on. Drying too quickly with fans on high blast or stopping too early can leave hidden moisture behind. That can then lead to odors, swelling, or microbial growth later on. The drying equipment runs continuously while we monitor the moisture levels every day to make sure that all areas are drying correctly. So, better a little patience now than a lingering problem later on.
During this period, one technician came every day to check the moisture levels and track the drying progress. Daily readings help confirm that hidden moisture is fully removed and that the structure is drying correctly, and also for insurance purposes if needed.
Once the drying process was completed, two of our crew members returned for the final walkthrough and to get our equipment.
Timeline and Team Involvement
The contents packing company took one day to collect all of the affected personal belongings.
The mitigation work itself took one full day to complete.
The structural drying process continued for six additional days with daily moisture monitoring.
Project involvement included:
Three crew members during mitigation
One technician for daily drying checks
Two crew members for final equipment removal
Helping a Homeowner Through a Difficult Situation
For the homeowner Danielle, this was the first time she had ever dealt with sewage damage, and she was surprised as to how much work and attention to detail was required to correctly fix it all.
Situations involving contaminated water can feel overwhelming very quickly, especially when insurance, cleanup decisions, and health concerns all happen at once, sometimes in the middle of the night.
Danielle shared that she was very thankful for how quickly our team responded and appreciated how clearly we explained each step of the process. She also mentioned that the guidance we provided during the insurance process helped make a stressful situation feel much more manageable. We were very glad to help.
